A Little History

A few weeks ago, Playwright Lee Wochner asked me if I wanted to come and read his play – He Said She Said – at a meeting of his company, Moving Arts to determine the selections and line-up for their upcoming October One-Act Festival.

I had read the play for Lee on the Porch of the Great Plains Theatre Conference shortly after he had written it. He said he had written it with me in mind and would I wanna read it that night. Well, those kinda words do wonders for any actor’s ego and so, of course, I agreed. We scheduled an impromptu reading of it on the porch after the evening performance that night. A pleasurable experience all-around.

As was the reading of it a few weeks back for the members of Moving Arts. I wrote to Lee afterwards and told him that if it was selected, I would dig working on it.

Audition? Wha-uh?

When I heard from Steve Lozier that they had selected the play for the festival and he would let me know about auditions I got a tad confused. Here I was remembering “written with you in mind”. Still, good to go in and read for the director and make sure I fit what he’s looking for, right?

So, I took my slightly bruised ego and headed to the auditions hoping to make an impression on director Ross Kramer. All’s well that ends well I suppose and I booked the role…

So, I am committed to my first piece of theatre in Los Angeles! Outside of the various theatre conferences over the last few years, I haven’t acted in a play since New York. I am looking forward with great anticipation to treading the boards once again…more to come…

So, I have been in Alaska since early February working on Make Good The Fires, a world premiere by Arlitia Jones. Pretty much have been sequestered in rehearsal and having a blast. We open this Friday, March 13th. Here are a few photos from our press shoot…

This year I am honored to be a featured artist at The Last Frontier Theater Confernce in Valdez, AK. The link above will take you to the featured artists page where you can see what wonderful company I am in. This conference is run by Dawson Moore, and his support and love of theatre and of playwrights (he is one himself) bound this conference to greatness. If you know him, you know what I mean. If you don’t know him, you should.

Now in it’s 16th year, the conference is considered by many THE conference to attend. Why? Well, you just can’t beat Alaska in June. It’s just outrageously beautiful and surrounded by mountains and the Prince William Sound. It’s also set in the city of Valdez where the population is less than 10,000 people (probably more like 5,000). What this provides is a peaceful out-of-the-way place where the focus of the conference is really the work. I mean, yes, there are those late nights at the Pipeline bar, but that’s for another post.

The other thing that makes this conference so great is it’s focus on the playwright. Yes, it’s a theatre conference per se, but the primary focus of the conference and the reason it exists is its long-standing dedication to furthering and fostering the work of the playwright. From first-time writers to legends, this conference has seen it all.

Last years conference was one of the best weeks of my life. I met some great people, got to be involved in some wonderful pieces of theatre.  I have no doubt that this year shall be any different! More news on this as it comes in. I will be posting and blastcasting about it, so stay tuned.

This year I have the honor of being a short play lab panelist and will have to find some way to get up early everyday during a theatre conference! I am honored to be able to assist the conference in this way and look forward to hearing all the great work!

The honored playwright this year is Douglas Wright, writer of such great works such as I Am My Own Wife and Quills. I will work with the Kokopelli Theatre once again to bring some of Doug’s work to the stage in an evening of his work. Hello from Valdez. It’s Wednesday and we are half way through the week. It’s been a great and awesome week so far! I have met some wonderful folks and also been able to reconnect with some of my old time friends. I have also gotten to play a range of really fun roles and meet some gret playwrights along the way. The picture above is outside the schools dorms (where we are staying) and cannot possibly give you the impression of what the backgrounds are like here in Valdez. I almost forget that I am from Alaska!

Last night we had a bonfire up on Mineral Creek road and I neglected to take my camera. Some unbelievable views, but they are only mind memories (which are sometimes the best anyway!).

Okay, hopefully more to come and I will spend the next several days taking photos, as I have not been capturing enough of the beauty of the people, the land and the conference.
