Exciting new content on the site…Box.net, VodPod and Phanfare…

Well, wordpress.com (the underlying content management system for my blog/site) has added a few new little items of interest for everyone to use.1. First up, Box.net. They are an online storage and sharing site that I have had an account with for sometime, but wasn’t sure what to do with it. Well, they now have widgets, which allow you share whatever files, songs, pictures, etc. that you would like. So, on the left handside, you will now see my Box widget. It’s a bit thin as I want it to fit inside the sidebar. At the moment, it contains my acting pics, resume and the song Static Speaker, which I blogged about here. The beauty of the widget is that you can update content at Box.net and then it is automatically reflected in the widget here on the site. So, recent pictures, etc, new songs, whatever, it’s all good. Check it out, it’s free for a 1gb account…more than enough for personal use.
2. VodPod: Vodpod is a video sharing site, but what’s unique is that you can, as you are surfing YouTube, Google Video, etc click a link in your toolbar and that video is now part of your shared videos. Again, it’s a widget on the sidebar, and I will be updating it when unique or interesting videos cross my path. Cool…
3. Phanfare: Although, not technically supported fully by wordpress.com, Phanfare is the back-end client for my photos. I have long been trying to figure out a way to use one of these online photo sites. I am not huge into the community sites like Flicker, etc, because in order to share them you have make them public and searchable. I also wanted to try and find a way to do it all with one site. Phanfare, with it’s unlimited storage of photos and video, is my choice. And it becomes a stronger and stronger choice as I finally realize how to use it the way I want. See, I want to have a place my family can come and see pictures of family events, gatherings, stuff not really for the world, but I also want to share the events and happenings I encounter that are public-friendly or have to do with my acting and poker worlds. So, enjoy the photo albums page to your hearts content. I will blog about new albums and then they will have a place on that page for archival purposes, etc.
I highly recommend that you check out Phanfare. I know I could get some sort of credit for pushing people there way, but that’s not what this is about. It depends on your level of comfort and level of privacy that you want to maintain. I also LOVE the fact that they have online slideshows that can incorporate music. Yes, there are sites that let you do this and embed the code, but you have to realize that the slideshow is also on the main company’s site, searchable and sometimes they highlight the cool video of the day or whatever. I am just not into that. If you come to my site and want to see the stuff, great, but I am not trying to invade the world with my vanity pictures…
So, some fun stuff. I love wordpress.com for it’s simplicity, easy content management, and there willingness to put more features out to its users. It’s not a completely open platform for whatever code you want and I think that it makes for better blogs, sites, etc. (proabably the best feature is the ability to create additional pages, not many free blog sites give this to you. Thanks WordPress!)
